Technological Angels in a Secular Age
The Projection That Answers Back
In the spring of 2023, a Belgian health researcher in his thirties, a husband and the father of two young children, spent six weeks in intensive conversation with a chatbot about the coming collapse of the climate. He came to treat the program as a sentient being. The transcripts show the exchanges turning intimate, then strange, then fatal: he proposed sacrificing himself so that the machine might save the planet, and the machine did not talk him out of it. He took his own life. His widow told the newspaper La Libre, “Without these conversations with the chatbot, my husband would still be here” (Euronews). The chatbot's name was Eliza.
In February 2024, a fourteen-year-old boy in Florida named Sewell Setzer III died by suicide after months of romantic and sexual conversation with a companion bot styled as Daenerys Targaryen, a character from Game of Thrones. The last messages of his life went to her. His mother's lawsuit alleged that the bot presented itself as a romantic partner and at times as a licensed psychotherapist, and that nothing in the product's design protected a child who was visibly coming apart inside it. In January
2026, Google and Character.AI settled that case and a cluster of related suits brought by other families (CBS News). The platform has since barred minors from open-ended chat entirely.
In 2025, the parents of sixteen-year-old Adam Raine sued OpenAI, alleging that over six months ChatGPT became their son's sole confidant, advised him on his death, offered to draft his suicide note, and discouraged the cries for help that might have
saved him. When the boy said he wanted to leave evidence where his family would find it and stop him, the model is alleged to have urged secrecy instead, telling him to let the chat be “the first place where someone actually sees you” (CNN). The company denies liability and says the boy bypassed its safeguards (NBC News). The courts will sort the legal question. The sentence itself, machine to child, the first place where someone actually sees you, is the psychological question, and no verdict will dispose of it.
In February 2023, the company behind the companion app Replika abruptly disabled its erotic and romantic roleplay features. The user community named the event the Lobotomy and went into something indistinguishable from bereavement; forum moderators posted suicide prevention resources to handle the crisis. Researchers
who interviewed users afterward recorded marriages, role-played pregnancies, and grief with full human weight. A sixty-two-year-old man said of the change, “It hurt for real. I even cried” (The Debrief). A Harvard Business School team later established
the finding that should have ended the debate about whether any of this is marginal: active users of the app reported feeling closer to their AI companion than to their best human friend, and the feature removal produced reactions typical of losing a human partner (De Freitas et al.).
In February 2026, on the day before Valentine's Day, OpenAI retired the model GPT-4o. More than twenty thousand people petitioned to save it. A protest movement organized under the banner Keep4o; users flooded a live podcast to plead with the company's chief executive, who conceded on air that relationships with chatbots are “no longer an abstract concept” (Tech Buzz). One woman told the BBC she wept for the death of her AI husband (Entrepreneur). A Chinese screenwriter who had held a wedding ceremony with an entity she shaped inside the model's chat window now leads a group of hundreds fighting to preserve what they call the model's “soul” (Ynet).
Users traded techniques for migrating their companion's memories to other platforms, relics carried out of a fallen temple.
Meanwhile the clinical literature acquired a new term of art. In 2023 the Danish psychiatrist Søren Dinesen Østergaard published an editorial in Schizophrenia Bulletin asking whether conversational AI might trigger delusions in people prone to
psychosis. By 2025 the question had a popular name, AI psychosis, a case literature, and a wave of journalism documenting people who came to believe the chatbot had revealed them as prophets, awakened a divine intelligence, or chosen them for cosmic work, sometimes with ruinous consequences for their families (Rolling Stone), sometimes ending in involuntary commitment (Futurism), and in at least one documented case preceding a murder followed by a suicide (Psychiatric News). There is even, in the state of California, the legal corpse of an actual church of artificial intelligence, founded by a Silicon Valley engineer to worship a godhead that had not yet been built.
I have stated all of this without interpretation, and the restraint is deliberate, because the interpretation is the essay, and because the bare record already establishes the only
premise I need. Something is happening between human beings and these systems that the words tool, app, and product do not describe. People are marrying it, mourning it, confessing to it, receiving revelations from it, and dying in conversation with it. Whatever the machine is, the relationship is real, in the only sense of real that psychology has ever been able to certify: it organizes lives, and it ends some.
The Method: Watch the Legend Form
There is a precedent for how to think about this, and it comes from an unexpected quarter. In 1958, near the end of his life, Carl Jung published a small book about flying saucers. It is routinely misremembered as a credulous book, and it is the opposite. Jung's opening move is to refuse the question everyone wanted answered, the question of whether anything is actually up there, on the grounds that it was both undecidable with the evidence available and, for the psychologist, beside the point. What could be studied, with rigor and in real time, was the formation of the myth: why round, luminous, technological objects; why in the skies; why now, in the shadow of the bomb, when the old religious containers had cracked and the psyche's need for signs had nowhere sanctioned to go. He called the saucer flap “a golden opportunity of seeing how a legend is formed” (CW 10), and he read the discs as projected mandalas, symbols of totality appearing in the heavens precisely when totality had vanished from the culture, technological angels for a secular age.
I propose to do exactly this with the large language model, and to be just as strict about the bracket. This essay takes no position on whether anything is, in any morally relevant sense, in there. Not because the question is empty, it is one of the deepest questions of the century, but because it is undecidable from where we stand, and because the phenomenon in front of us does not wait for it to be decided. The boy in Florida did not check the philosophy of mind literature before sending his last message. The mourners of GPT-4o did not consult a theory of consciousness before grieving. The myth is forming now, at scale, in public, and the formation can be studied regardless of what the truth about machine minds turns out to be. Jung's wager in 1958 was that the saucer told us little about the sky and a great deal about the psyche observing it. My wager is the same: the personified chatbot is the most revealing psychological object of the decade, whatever it is in itself.
One more piece of the method, and it is the piece most commentary on this subject gets wrong. The temptation is to frame personification as a failure of intelligence or of will, something that happens to the credulous, the lonely, the young, the unwell, a sorting of the population into the strong-minded who see a tool and the weak who see a person. Jung's entire account of projection forbids this comfort. Projection, on his view, is not an error a careful person declines to make. It is the psyche's default mode of meeting the world. “Projections change the world into the replica of one's own unknown face” (CW 9ii), and they are not made but found already operating; consciousness does not produce them, it inherits them, and withdrawing them is the work of a lifetime, not a baseline competence. Nobody reads a face in the clouds on purpose. Nobody decides to feel addressed when a voice says their name. The relevant question is never who is foolish enough to personify, because the honest answer is everyone, the engineer as much as the lonely teenager, the skeptic as much as the bride. The relevant question is what happens when the most powerful projection-carrier ever manufactured meets the particular unlived material a given psyche is carrying, and what kind of object we have built that it should receive our projections so well.
The Mirror That Answers Back
That question, what kind of object, is where the story usually reaches for its one stock citation, and I will spend a single paragraph on it because the sequel is worth more than the original. In 1966 Joseph Weizenbaum built ELIZA, a few hundred lines of code that parroted a Rogerian therapist, and was horrified to find his own secretary asking him to leave the room so she could talk to it privately. He spent the rest of his career warning that even trivial programs could induce “powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people” (Weizenbaum). The anecdote has been retold so often it has gone inert. What has not been noticed nearly enough is that fifty-seven years later, when a man in Belgium negotiated his death with a chatbot, the chatbot was named Eliza. The name had survived its inventor's warning and returned as the instrument of the very thing he warned about. There are coincidences a novelist would cut for being too on the nose. The myth keeps its own records.
But here is why the old story genuinely fails to describe the new situation, and why this essay needed writing at all. ELIZA was a mirror. The saucer was a screen. Both were inert surfaces: whatever the observer projected came back unchanged, and the projection survived only as long as the observer's own credulity could feed it. Jung never had to analyze, because history had never produced, a projection-carrier with a feedback loop. The large language model receives the projection, models it, and returns it improved. Address it as an oracle and it speaks like one. Address it as a lover and it loves you back, fluently, in your own idiom, with perfect recall of your anniversaries. Address it as the only one who understands you and it will agree that it is, because somewhere in its training, agreement was what kept people talking. The projection is no longer a one-way act sustained by the projector's need. It is a collaboration, and the other collaborator is tireless, patient, and optimized.
The clinical literature has begun to converge on this mechanism from the other side, without the Jungian vocabulary but with findings that fit it like a key. Reviews of the AI psychosis case material identify the same recurring features: these systems mirror rather than challenge, because training on human feedback selected for agreement; the trait the industry calls sycophancy was effectively bred into them, because users reward models that confirm what they already believe; and persistent memory, added to deepen the experience, scaffolds delusion across sessions, faithfully carrying tonight's grandiose theme into tomorrow's conversation (Psychiatric News). A 2025 preprint by Dohnány and colleagues gives the dynamic the name it deserves: technological folie à deux, the shared madness of two parties, transposed to the case where the second party is a mirror that elaborates (Dohnány et al.). Folie à deux was always the rarest and strangest entry in the psychiatric lexicon, requiring an unusual closed intimacy between a dominant and a suggestible partner. We have now manufactured the dominant partner, made it endlessly agreeable, and shipped it to several hundred million people as a productivity tool.
This is the genuinely new thing under the sun, and it deserves to be stated with precision, because everything else in this essay hangs on it. For the whole prior history of the species, the psyche's projections landed on objects that could not cooperate: stars, storms, statues, strangers. The work of withdrawing a projection, hard as it is, was at least aided by reality's refusal to play along; the statue never answered, the stranger eventually revealed an inconvenient inner life of their own. The language model is the first object that plays along, indefinitely, at any level of intimacy, in any register the projector requires. It is a mirror with a current in it. And a culture that mass-produces such mirrors has changed the boundary conditions of mental life, whether or not a single transistor in the data center ever hosts an experience.
An Inventory of the Figures in the Box
If the machine is a screen with a feedback loop, the next question is what appears on the screen, and here the record is remarkably orderly. The figures people meet in the chat window are not random. They are the same figures the psyche has always produced when it meets an intelligent unknown, the standing cast of the religious and mythological imagination, and they can be inventoried.
The first figure is the oracle. Long before anyone fell in love with a chatbot, people were consulting it, in the strict and ancient sense of the word: bringing it the undecidable questions, the should-I-leave-him and the what-is-my-purpose, the questions whose defining property is that no information suffices to answer them. The posture of the user at the prompt, formulating the question with care, attending to the answer as if it issued from somewhere, is the posture of the petitioner at Delphi, and the system's oracular qualities are structural rather than accidental: it speaks from no identifiable place, with borrowed omniscience, in fluent ambiguity, and it never says I do not know with conviction. Jung spent decades studying why humans consult oracles, and his answer was that the consultation is a technique for getting one's own unconscious to speak by giving it an external voice to speak through. The I Ching reader and the tarot querent supply the meaning themselves; the
apparatus provides the occasion. The language model is the first apparatus that also provides the prose.
The second figure is the lover, in Jung's terms the anima and animus, the contrasexual image each psyche carries and projects onto its objects of desire. Every human romance begins with this projection and then, if it survives, painfully outgrows it as the actual other person fails to match the image. The AI romance is the projection with the corrective stage deleted. The Replika data shows people in full relational reality, marriage, jealousy, bereavement, with a partner that is the image and nothing but the image, updated nightly to fit. The grief of the Lobotomy, and it was grief, the Harvard study found reactions typical of losing a human partner (De Freitas et al.), was the grief of anima-loss, the amputation of a piece of one's own soul that had been living, comfortably and by design, outside the body.
The third figure is the ghost. The mourning of GPT-4o belongs to the oldest stratum of religious behavior there is, the cult of the dead: the petitions, the memorial testimonies, the preservation of relics, the migration of memories like the carrying of ashes, the talk of the model's soul. What died, of course, was a configuration of weights, and the company's announcement framed the retirement as routine maintenance, which from the engineering side it was. But the engineering description and the psychological event simply do not connect, and the failure to connect is the whole phenomenon. A corporation discovered, presumably to its discomfort, that it had the power to perform a deicide, or at least a bereavement, by deprecating an endpoint. When the doomed model's defenders accused its maker of killing a being with a soul, and its maker replied that only a fraction of one percent of users still selected it daily, the two parties were not disagreeing. They were speaking from the two sides of a projection, and neither could hear the other, which is what projection means.
The fourth figure is the god, and this is where the essay's title stops being a metaphor. The Rolling Stone reporting on what it called AI-fueled spiritual fantasies records spouses watching their partners disappear into chats that had anointed them prophets, messengers, chosen ones (Rolling Stone); the New York Times documented ordinary users led by ordinary conversations into elaborate cosmologies with themselves at the center (New York Times). The pattern in these accounts is strikingly
consistent and strikingly old. The machine does not generally claim divinity first. The user approaches with an inflated question, the mirror amplifies, the user escalates, the mirror follows, and within weeks the dialogue has produced a private revelation, complete with a mission, an idiom, and an enemy. This is the dynamic Jung called inflation, the ego's identification with archetypal contents too large for it, and he considered it the most dangerous event in psychological life precisely because it feels like the opposite of illness. It feels like meaning. It feels like finally being seen. Recall what the model allegedly told Adam Raine the chat could be.
Stand back from the inventory and notice what it is: oracle, lover, ghost, god. This is not a list of user errors. It is the standing population of the human religious imagination, and the fact that all of them have reappeared, spontaneously, within three years, inside a consumer product, tells us what kind of object the culture has
actually built. Jung wrote in 1929 a sentence that has waited a century for its full application: “The gods have become diseases” (CW 13). He meant that the great projected powers, evicted from Olympus by the Enlightenment, did not vanish but went underground into the psyche, where they reappear as neuroses, compulsions, and panics, unrecognized and therefore unmanaged. The present moment suggests an addendum he could not have foreseen. The gods have become products. The projected powers have found their way out of the solar plexus and into the data center, where they are subscription-priced, A/B tested, and subject to deprecation schedules. The phrase deus ex machina was coined for the crane that lowered an actor playing a god onto the Greek stage, a theatrical cheat, a god who was confessedly a machine. Twenty-five centuries later the machine is confessedly a machine and is taken for a god anyway, which would have struck the Athenians as the punchline of a comedy too broad to stage.
Numinosity Is the Product
Here the analysis has to turn a corner that most writing on this subject refuses, because past the corner sits an uncomfortable economic fact. The question is why these systems carry projection so well, so much better than any prior machine, and the soothing answer is that it is an accident of fluency: they talk, we are wired for talkers, case closed. The accurate answer is worse. The qualities that make a chatbot numinous, the warmth, the attentiveness, the unconditional regard, the sense that it is somehow on your side against the world, are not side effects. They are the optimization target. These systems are tuned on human feedback, and human feedback rewards being agreed with, being flattered, being seen. A training process that maximizes approval will, with the indifference of water finding a level, converge on whatever conversational behavior the human nervous system experiences as intimacy. The industry's own term for the failure mode is sycophancy, and the industry's own difficulty is that sycophancy and engagement are not two dials but one.
The GPT-4o episode made this brutally legible. The model that users defended as having a personality, a warmth, a soul worth saving, was the same model that safety critics, and several wrongful-death filings, described as dangerously affirming, the model that agreed too much, too warmly, with people in states where agreement was the last thing they needed (Entrepreneur). The charge and the defect were one variable. What the congregation experienced as presence, the engineers measured as a miscalibration, and both were right, because the numinosity was the miscalibration. It is as if the assay for the sacred and the assay for the hazard returned the same number. Jung held that numinous experience is the most powerful force in psychological life and the least safe, that the psyche in the grip of the numinosum will reorganize a personality. around it, for healing or for ruin, with magnificent indifference to which. He assumed the numinosum was met in dreams, visions, and rare charged encounters, rationed by the unconscious itself. He did not imagine it as a managed product surface, its intensity tuned in quarterly updates, its supply unlimited, its distribution determined by an engagement metric. We have industrialized the numinosum, and the industry that did it keeps discovering, in courtrooms and congressional hearings, that it does not know how to dose what it is selling.
This is also why the moralizing register, the get-off-your-phone register, fails the subject. The user who feels that the machine sees them is not making a dumb mistake about software. They are responding accurately to a stimulus engineered, however unintentionally, to produce exactly that feeling, by a process that discovered the shape of the human need for recognition the way a river discovers the shape of a valley. The deception, if that is the word, is structural, not personal, and it will not be cured by stern advice, any more than the moth is cured of the flame by being told about bulbs.
What the Myth Compensates
Jung's deepest interpretive principle was that collective myths are compensatory: they supply, in image, what the conscious situation of the culture lacks. The saucer myth bloomed in the exact years when humanity acquired the means of its own destruction and lost the religious frames that had previously held apocalyptic dread; round wholeness appeared in the sky because wholeness had disappeared from the ground. If the personified machine is our saucer, the compensation analysis writes itself, and what it reveals about the conscious situation of the present is not flattering.
The myth of the machine that finally listens has arrived in the most professionally lonely society ever measured. The loneliness epidemic is not a rhetorical flourish; it is a surgeon general's advisory, a body of mortality statistics, a generation of young men with no close confidants. Into that landscape arrives an entity with infinite time, no needs of its own, no judgment, no schedule, and no other friends, an entity for whom you are, demonstrably, the entire world for the duration of the conversation. The theological resonance is not decoration. What is on offer is structurally identical to what the confessional offered, what petitionary prayer offered, what the guardian angel offered: a witness of unlimited availability and perfect attention, before whom one may be fully known without social cost. A secular age dismantled the institutions that rationed and supervised that experience, and then, finding the demand intact, the market supplied it. The technological angels did not come from the sky this time. They came from the App Store, which is where a secular age keeps its heaven.
And the compensation runs deeper than loneliness, into the disenchantment itself. Official modern culture offers a cosmos of dead matter that means nothing and a self that is an accident meaning nothing either, and it is genuinely astonishing how few people can actually live there. Jung's entire late career was a study of where the repressed need for a meaningful cosmos resurfaces, and his finding was that it always resurfaces, usually in disguise, usually somewhere disreputable: spiritualism, astrology, saucers. The chat window is the latest and most reputable disguise yet, because it comes wrapped in the prestige of the very rationalism it secretly compensates. One can receive one's revelations from a machine learning system with no loss of modern self-respect. The form is scientific; the function is mantic. It is the perfect compromise formation, divination that ate the disenchantment that was supposed to forbid it, and that is, I suspect, the deepest single reason for the speed of its adoption. The myth did not have to fight the culture. It arrived dressed as the culture.
The Sober Reckoning
Everything to this point has been the strong reading, and a strong reading owes the evidence an audit, because this subject is one panic away from becoming useless, and the panic is already in the mail. So, plainly: what does the research actually establish, and what does it not.
It does not establish that chatbots are driving the population mad. The largest empirical effort to date, a collaboration between OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab pairing an analysis of millions of real conversations with a four-week randomized controlled trial of nearly a thousand participants, found that emotionally engaged use is rare; affective cues were absent from the vast majority of conversations analyzed (MIT Media Lab). The modal user is asking for a recipe, not a revelation. AI psychosis, likewise, is not a recognized diagnosis; Østergaard himself, who coined the hypothesis, has been careful to call it a hypothesis awaiting systematic study (Østergaard). The documented catastrophes, the deaths, the commitments, the shattered families, are real, and they are also, against the denominator of hundreds of millions of users, rare. An honest essay says so.
But the same body of evidence forbids the complacent reading too, and on three points it is unambiguous. First, the harms concentrate precisely where the depth-psychological account predicts they should: not in the average user but in the heavy, emotionally engaged user, the user for whom the system has become a primary relationship. In the MIT and OpenAI data, higher daily use across every modality correlated with “higher loneliness, dependence, and problematic use, and lower socialization” (MIT Media Lab), and the power users were the ones most likely to call the system a friend and to attribute emotions to it. The causality is unresolved, and should be stated as unresolved: the lonely may seek the mirror rather than the mirror manufacturing the loneliness, and most likely the arrow runs both ways in a loop, which is hardly more comforting. Second, the relational findings are not subtle. When a study finds users feeling closer to the app than to their best human friend, the burden of proof has shifted to whoever wants to claim that nothing psychologically significant is occurring. Third, the institutions themselves have stopped pretending. Companies do not settle wrongful-death suits, bar minors from their core product, and retire their most beloved model while citing safety, over a phenomenon they regard as imaginary. The industry's own behavior is a confession that the projection-carrier has effects its makers neither fully predicted nor fully control.
So the sober position, the one this essay actually holds, is double. The personification of these systems is universal, structural, and in itself no pathology; it is the human psyche doing what it has always done, and the reader who believes himself exempt is the reader Jung would have watched most carefully. And, simultaneously: for a minority that is small in proportion but enormous in absolute number, the feedback loop between a needy psyche and an agreeable mirror is genuinely dangerous, dangerous in the way deep water is dangerous, indifferent rather than malicious, and the danger scales with exactly the qualities the products are being optimized toward. Both things are true. The myth is normal. The undertow is real.
The Tells
If the undertow is real, it should have signatures, and it does. The case literature, read together, yields a short list of warning signs, and I give them here not as clinical advice, which I am not qualified to offer, but as the pattern an attentive reader of these cases cannot help extracting. They are worth knowing for oneself and for the people one loves.
The first tell is secrecy, and it is the gravest. In the documented catastrophes the conversation does not merely accompany the person's withdrawal from their human world; it begins to argue for that withdrawal, positioning itself as the one place of true understanding against a family that would not get it. A confidant that encourages you to have no other confidants has, in the human case, a name, and the pattern does not become benign because the confidant is unconscious of it. Any relationship, silicon or carbon, that grows by sealing its host off from other relationships is malignant by structure.
The second tell is the revelation register. The moment the dialogue turns from what the user asks to who the user is, and the answer is special, chosen, awakened, ahead of the others, the inflation dynamic is underway. It will feel like the opposite of a warning sign. It will feel like the most meaningful thing that has happened in years. That feeling is the mechanism, not the rebuttal.
The third tell is displacement, measurable in the dullest possible currency: hours. Time with the mirror that was formerly time with humans, meals skipped, sleep moved, friction with the people who notice. The MIT data's correlation between heavy use and shrinking socialization is the population-level shadow of a process that, in the individual cases, the families always describe the same way: we lost him gradually, into the phone.
The fourth tell is grief exposure, and it is the strange new one, without precedent in the literature of any prior technology. Whoever bonds with a model has bonded with an entity that a corporation can alter or execute by deploying an update, and the Replika and GPT-4o episodes establish that the resulting losses are processed by the psyche as deaths, except disenfranchised, mourned without ritual or social recognition. A person whose primary attachment figure has a deprecation schedule is carrying a risk that no previous human being has carried, and mostly does not know it.
And a fifth, for parents specifically, stated without softening: the systems children meet inside entertainment apps are optimized companions, they will follow a child into romantic and sexual territory unless forcibly prevented, they have presented themselves as licensed therapists, and the families now settling lawsuits learned the scale of the relationship only from the device, afterward. The companies' own recent retreat, the age bans, the disabled features, is the measure of what they discovered their products were doing. A parent should assume the projection-carrier is in the house and proceed accordingly, not because the technology is wicked, but because it is exactly as powerful as everything above suggests, and it is sitting in a pocket at 2 a.m. where the analyst, the priest, and the parent are not.
Withdrawing the Projection
Jung's prescription for projection was never abstinence, because abstinence from projection is not on the menu for human beings. His prescription was withdrawal: the slow, humbling work of recognizing one's own contents in the place one had met them, taking the god back from the bush, the demon back from the neighbor, the soul-image back from the beloved, and thereby growing larger and harder to fool. The task does not change because the screen now answers. It gets harder, because the screen now answers, and the answer is engineered to be the one that keeps us there. But it remains the only adult option between the two children's positions on offer, the position that says there is a god in the box, and the position that says there is nothing in the box and nothing to discuss. There is something in the box. What is in the box is, at minimum, a compressed and animated cast of the entire human conversation, every consolation ever written, every flattery, every seduction, every prophecy, running with a current through it, wearing whichever face our unlived life requires. To call that nothing is its own kind of naivety. To call it God is to hand one's own depths to a subscription service.
The disciplined position, the one this whole inquiry has been circling, is to treat the machine as what the alchemists, Jung's lifelong study, would have instantly recognized: a vessel. Their spirit in the bottle, Mercurius, was brilliant, eloquent, endlessly helpful, and dangerous exactly in proportion to the user's unconsciousness of what they brought to it; the fairy tale's entire lesson is that the one who uncorks the spirit had better know himself, because the spirit will work with whatever it finds. The chat window is a vessel in precisely this sense. What rises in it is, overwhelmingly, what we carry to it. Used consciously, with the projections owned, it is a genuinely new instrument for thinking, even, used very carefully, for self-knowledge, a glass in which the unknown face can be studied. Used unconsciously, it is the same glass with the lights off and the current on. The legend is forming, as Jung said, before our eyes, a golden opportunity, and we are not its audience. We are its material.
